A refinement of this occurred to me. Perhaps it could ask that you select a category ("dogs", "landmarks" etc) and then the web site would post to a Twitter account per category. Followers could try and identify the pictures in idle moments. Web site tracks good identifications and keeps score for Twitter users?

This already exists. Look at http://www.peaks-app.ch/
or point-de-vue.ch - both iphone apps.

I wanted to do this sort of thing on planes, as part of the inflight entertainment system. The customer would look out the window and there would be a little head-up-display thing on their window, that would show them the object (mountain, city) that they were looking at. The plane's internal computers already know most of the details, and often display a flight status/location screen somewhere. This is just a natural progression from that.

The oldest answer in the book: outsource to a callcentre in India. They can wikipedia or google whatever it is. Return details on the identified object surrounded by links to various google ads.
If the call centre can't identify it then so oh dear how sad - it's not as though the customer spent any money for the service.
The other option is like the website you suggest. Joe public can identify the tricky ones (somehow within 20 minutes though... Could you make it an hour?) I'm not sure what's in it for Joe public though... maybe offer them eg a $1 itunes credit or something similar.

This sounds like Shazam for life. For monetization, you can look at how they make money (by putting links to advertisers who sell what you asked to identify). As far as technical details... Whew!

I have no medical qualifications, but have plenty of time to spare and access to the internet. The itch must be caused by something like an allergic reaction, thus any oral antihistamine should do the trick.

Forgot to mention, the MSRP is $399 US, however I bought both of mine from Best Buy on sale for $129 US each. Also, the deck is very easy to install. I installed mine in 20 minutes.

A solution to this issue now exists. It is called the CA-IP500 and it is made by Fusion Car Audio. It is a single DIN car stereo that has an internal iPod dock. The unit comes with several "sleeves" that hold most current models of iPods, excluding iPhones. The sleeves plug into the front of the unit, behind the faceplate, and are easily removable for multiple iPod use. I bought two of these units, they work great.

See the below manufacturer website for details:
